What is the Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission?
As a city and county government based entity, our primary purpose is to promote Memphis music locally, nationally and to the world. In addition, MSCMC fosters the growth and development of the Memphis Music Community.
Who is the Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission?
Johnnie Walker, a 30-year music industry veteran, is Executive Director. MSCMC is a body of twenty-two (22) Commissioners who are appointed by both the City of Memphis Mayor and the Mayor of Shelby County. Chairman of the board is Memphis musician and music producer, Kurt Clayton.
What services does the Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission provide?
Our current support services include the Memphis Music Legal Clinic, Pre-Paid health care plans for musicians via the Memphis Plan at the Church Health Center, various music industry based workshops and learning seminars.

How do I become a board member of the MSCMC?
Submit your resume to our offices or complete our online biographical form for consideration. Board member selections are generally based on a variety of criteria, which includes music interest, business knowledge, creativity and commitment to serve the public. Once appointed by the Mayor, the appointee must be confirmed by the Memphis City Council or the Shelby County Board of Commissioners.
What does the MSCMC actually do for musicians?
We provide support services and a variety of resources that empower musicians and help them to reach their creative and professional goals.
Can the MSCMC help me produce or make my CD?
No, the Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission is not in the business of producing or manufacturing CDs.
Will the MSCMC help me to promote my CD?
The Music Commission does not promote individual CDs or music projects, however, through resources made available to the Memphis music community by MSCMC you can gain valuable knowledge about how to effectively market and promote your CD.
What is Memphis Music Monday and how can I appear as a performer?
Memphis Music Monday is a bi-weekly after work networking affair produced by MSCMC. It is designed for music industry idea exchange and general Memphis Music business networking. Memphis music is featured throughout the evening whether “live” or on CD. To perform, simply provide MSCMC with a sample of your music and let us know your availability. All music submitted must be clean and void of any explicit lyrics
Can I hand deliver my CD to the MSCMC?
Yes, City Hall, 125 North Main Street, 2nd floor. Make sure your CD includes your name and contact information. If your CD contains more than one song, a song list would be helpful.
What is the Memphis Music Industry Forum?
Monthly seminar gatherings for artists, musicians, businesses and supporters of Memphis Music to discuss issues that affect the Memphis Music Community as well as educate and further the goals of musicians and concerned businesses in all aspects music and entertainment. The Memphis Music Community Forum is held every 1st Tuesday in the month.

Is there a fee to attend MSCMC events?
Most of our programs and events are free and open to public. However, there may be occasions whereby fundraisers are presented and an admission fee or donation may be requested.
What is Memphis Music Matters?
A non-profit charity created to foster the interests of professional Memphis musicians, as well as advance the conditions and social welfare of our musicians regardless of genre. Memphis Music Matters also provides educational programs, healthcare and other assistance and resources to musicians.
What is the Memphis Music Legal Clinic?
This Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission program provides FREE legal assistance, information and resources to Memphis musicians, performers, songwriters, producers and small entertainment businesses. Volunteer attorneys with expertise in music and entertainment law, as well as a variety of legal subjects, will be available to conduct individual, confidential sessions of up to thirty (30) minutes in length. The Memphis Music Legal Clinic is open every Thursday afternoon from 2:00pm - 5:00pm... located at 555 Beale Street.
How can I utilize the services provided by the Memphis Music Legal Clinic?
Services will be provided by appointment only. Appointments can be made daily during normal business hours by calling (901) 576-6857. Once you make your appointment, you will be scheduled for a confidential meeting with an attorney.
Does the MSCMC sponsor music events for other organizations?
All sponsorship requests are considered by the Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission. Every request must be accompanied by a completed MSCMC Sponsorship Request Form. Favorable funding decisions are based on the event’s compatibility to the mission and goals of the MSCMC.
