Memphis, Tennessee is the Home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock n’ Roll. Actually, it’s the cradle of American music. Don’t believe it? We offer as proof a partial list of some of the greatest names in American music- artists, musicians, producers, and writers. Also included are some folks who deserve far greater recognition, for they are the artists who laid the groundwork for future success or labored quietly in the shadows. Everyone on our list has strong associations with Memphis. Some, like Aretha Franklin and Koko Taylor, were born here. Others moved to Memphis at an early age-Elvis, Robert Johnson, Rufus Thomas- or early in their career, as did Charlie Rich, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash. Then there are those, like Otis Redding and ZZTop, who simply came here to make the greatest music they had within them to make.
Ultimately they all have been embraced as cherished members in the Memphis Music family. We hope you enjoy their short bios and our CD recommendations, subjective as they might be. We also hope you find them informative.
Sure we’re tooting our own horn, but we think after immersing yourself in the world of Memphis Music’s Makers & Shakers you’ll agree: Memphis has every reason to be proud of its musical heritage. Very proud.
